April 29, 2016 – New for 2016 in the city of Midland is the Midland Community Bike Tour… Midland’s version of a ‘slow roll.’ The first leisurely, community bike rides will begin the first week in May, specifically May 5 and May 7. All scheduled ride dates, times, descriptions, and maps are posted to the group’s new Facebook page “Midland Community Bike Tour.” Rides will be on two Thursdays and two Saturdays each month from May to September. The start/finish locations, times, and routes will vary. Midland is a “City of Modern Explorers,” so let’s have fun exploring Midland on our bikes! For more information, go to www.facebook.com/MidlandCommunityBikeTour.
The goal of the community bike ride is to help promote cycling safety, Midland’s bicycle routes, and a healthy lifestyle. The rides will range from 8 to 12 miles, will feature Midland’s trails and attractions, and will make use of the many designated bike paths and ‘Share the Road’ lanes within the City. See www.cityofmidlandmi.gov/441/Bike-Walk-Midland for more information on the city’s bike routes.
The Midland Community Bike Tour is endorsed by the City Planning Commission’s Non-Motorized Transportation Committee. Bicycle touring has become popular in several Michigan cities. Detroit’s Slow Roll™ attracts up to 3,000 riders for a weekly ride. The Counter Cruise in Saginaw and the BARS ride in Bay City have also become popular weekly events. We hope that you, your family and friends will participate in this new city event.
