[ARCHIVED] Battle of the Books Kickoff Set for Saturday, November 14

November 6, 2015 – The 2015-2016 Battle of the Books season will kick off on Saturday, November 14 at the Grace A. Dow Memorial Library.

The kickoff features a presentation by Stuart Gibbs, author of last year’s Battle book, The Last Musketeer, as well as the popular FunJungle series. The 20 titles on this year’s Battle list will be revealed at the end of the program.

Mr. Gibbs will speak at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the Library Auditorium. There will be an opportunity to meet the author at the book signing following the presentation. Barnes and Noble will be selling the author’s books, along with all of the books on the Battle list, after both of the programs.

Attendees of the kickoff event may also check out Battle books immediately after the 10 a.m. program in the Youth Services Area. Battle books will be available for general checkout after 3 p.m. on November 14. Books and booklists will not be available between programs.

Battle of the Books is a program designed to encourage and reward fourth and fifth grade readers. The program begins with the Kickoff in November and runs through the final battle in early March. Team registration deadline is Tuesday, January 19. Teams read from the list of twenty books and then compete in battles over the books beginning in mid-February. Students are encouraged to talk about the stories amongst their teammates to make the most of this shared reading experience.

For more information about Battle of the Books or the kickoff event, contact Youth Services at 989-837-3466 or visit the Library’s website at www.cityofmidlandmi.gov/library.
