[ARCHIVED] Great Michigan Read Discussion at Library

September 25, 2015 – This year’s Great Michigan Read, “Station Eleven” by Emily St. John Mandel, will be discussed at the Grace A. Dow Memorial Library on Wednesday, September 30, 7 p.m. in the Library Community Room.

This modern dystopian novel is set in Michigan after an epidemic has decimated the population, leaving few survivors. Following a troupe of Shakespearian actors, the author explores the importance of art in a world that is on the verge of losing its humanity.

In conjunction with the Great Michigan Read selection, two other examples of dystopian literature will be discussed: “The Walking Dead,” Vol 1, by Robert Kirkman on October 7; and “Oryx and Crake” by Margaret Atwood on November 4. Both are at 7 p.m. in the Library Community Room. Copies of all titles are available for checkout.

The Great Michigan Read is a biennial statewide literary program that uses literature to enhance understanding of our state, society, and humanity. It is presented by the Michigan Humanities Council with support from Meijer and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
