May 11, 2023 – Beginning Monday, May 15, a section of Whitewood Drive will be closed to through traffic as crews begin a street reconstruction project and infrastructure work for Phase 1 of the Whitewood Footing Drain Disconnection Program, a multi-year project through the Concept 5 Sewer Improvement Plan.
Whitewood Drive will be closed to through traffic from Congress Drive to Waldo Avenue while construction is underway. Sidewalks at each intersection will be removed and replaced Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant ramps. Additional information relevant only to property owners in the construction zone can be found at www.cityofmidlandmi.gov/concept5. Residents are encouraged to sign up for project-related email updates on this site before construction begins.
Work in this area is expected to be completed in July 2023.
A footing drain disconnection program (FDDP) aims to remove clean water from the sanitary sewer system by removing the existing connection between a home's footing drains and the sanitary sewer and redirecting that water to the storm sewer system. This prevents unnecessary water from entering and overwhelming the sanitary sewer system, which can cause sewer back-ups into homes, and reduces wear-and-tear and operational costs at the Water Reclamation Facility. The City’s FDDP currently includes approximately 370 homes located in the Moorland and Whitewood neighborhoods. All phases of the FDDP are expected to be completed in late 2027.
Residents are reminded that due to the nature of construction activities, the information provided may change at any time. Should an issue arise that would change this schedule, the City will provide updates online at www.cityofmidlandmi.gov/concept5 and via its Facebook and Twitter channels at @CityofMidlandMI.
