[ARCHIVED] Midland Firefighters Youth Foundation Offers Scholarships for Michigan Teens

The Midland Firefighters Youth Foundation has announced the availability of two scholarships available for Michigan students looking to further their educations.

Each scholarship will award two recipients up to $1,000 each for a total of $2,000 per scholarship. Applicants must be Michigan residents and must be enrolled in a post-secondary education institution (university, college, trade school, etc.) located in Michigan. Proof of residency and enrollment are required upon submission of application(s).

Greg Schmidt and Rodney Sweet Memorial Scholarship
The Greg Schmidt and Rodney Sweet Memorial Scholarship provides a financial award to a Michigan resident who is pursuing a college degree or certificate program within the scope of firefighting or emergency medical services (EMS).  Applicants must be currently enrolled in a fire science or emergency medical services program and must have a minimum 2.5 GPA from either the last semester of high school (if an incoming college student) or the previous semester of college. In addition to proof of residency and transcripts, applicants must submit a 500-word, typed essay pertaining to fire service or EMS on the subject of their choice. Funds from this scholarship may be used toward the awardee’s textbook fees, class fees, and tuition.

Timothy A. Longlet Memorial Scholarship
 
The Timothy A. Longlet Memorial Scholarship provides a financial award to a Michigan resident who is the son or daughter of a firefighter impacted by cancer and is pursuing a college or technical degree. Applicants must have a parent or legal guardian who was an active firefighter who was diagnosed with cancer. In addition to proof of residency and transcripts, applicants must submit a 500-word, typed essay detailing how cancer has affected their family and way of life. Funds from this scholarship may be used toward the awardee’s institutional fees, including textbook fees, class fees, meal plan, and tuition.

Applicants should submit their materials by mail no later than April 30, 2023 to the following address: Midland Firefighters Youth Foundation, ATTN: (Scholarship Name), 816 E. Haley St, Midland, MI 48640.

About the Midland Firefighters Youth Foundation

The Midland Firefighters Youth Foundation was established in 1987 with the intention to make a positive impact on the youth in the Midland Community. Through its work, the Foundation has helped children afford school supplies and attend summer camps, sponsored local youth groups and teams that emphasize education and athletics, provided holiday meals for needy families, and assisted children with medical issues.  The Youth Foundation has also established a tuition scholarship grant for students pursuing firefighting and EMS careers.
