City Promotes John Jurek to Fire Marshal

John Jurek

September 2, 2022 – The City of Midland is pleased to announce that John Jurek has been promoted fire marshal of the Midland Fire Department (MFD) effective August 29, 2022.

The fire marshal performs annual fire safety inspections on commercial and general assembly occupancies; reviews plans for new construction and remodeling projects with attention to fire safety; completes building inspections and fire systems tests on new and remodeled construction projects; and works to educate the public on fire safety and fire prevention initiatives.

Jurek joined the Midland Fire Department as a firefighter in 2004 and was promoted to fire truck operator in 2014 and lieutenant in 2021. During his tenure, he has served as an Acting Fire Inspector and Investigator, Team Manager of the Region 3 Incident Management Team, member of the Region 3 Homeland Security Planning Board, and member of the MFD drone team as a licensed airman through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Prior to MFD, he held firefighter positions with Pittsfield Township, Augusta Township, and Madison Township fire departments and has also served as a basic emergency medical technician (EMT-B) and a property risk inspector.

In addition to his accomplishments, Jurek brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position. He holds certifications as an Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (EMT-B), Fire Fighter I & II, and Fire Officer I, II, & III. He also is certified by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in National Incident Management System/Incident Management System for Fire Service and All Hazards Emergency Management. He has been certified by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the State of Michigan as a Certified Fire Inspector.

“John’s extensive experience as a first responder and his vast knowledge of fire safety and prevention make him a perfect fit for this role,” said Midland Fire Department Chief Joshua Mosher. “His work as fire marshal will undoubtedly continue to make Midland a safe community for years to come.”
