July 15, 2022 – The City of Midland is pleased to announce that Wastewater Treatment Plant Manager Bruce Royce has been named the 2022 Operations Professional of the Year by the Michigan Water Environment Association (MWEA).

Royce received the honor in June during the MWEA Annual Conference near Traverse City.

Royce joined the City of Midland in 2005 as an operator at the Wastewater Treatment Plant before being promoted to general supervisor, then to plant manager in January 2022. He also served as the City’s interim director of wastewater services from December 2020 – July 2021. He holds an associate’s degree from Muskegon Community College and a bachelor’s degree in physical sciences, environmental science, and education from Central Michigan University. He possesses Wastewater Operator Class A and Industrial Stormwater licenses from the State of Michigan and serves on the Delta College Water Environment Technology Advisory Committee.

“Bruce’s extensive professional knowledge and his passion for both managing and educating the public about wastewater operations make him incredibly deserving of this honor,“ says Director of Wastewater Services Jared Driscoll. “We are grateful for the work he does to ensure that our wastewater operations run safely and effectively every day and are very proud of his receiving this award.”

The MWEA Operations Professional of the Year is awarded to an operator of a municipal wastewater treatment plant who works on a day-to-day basis in operations and has displayed remarkable dedication to an employer and to the MWEA; excelled professionally; consistently generated good quality effluent; and publicly promoted the profession of the wastewater treatment plant operator.
