[ARCHIVED] City Performs Water Main Flushing

April 10, 2015 – The City of Midland Water Distribution crews will begin its annual water main flushing program on Monday, April 13. Hydrants throughout the water system will systematically be opened to clean and refresh the drinking water distribution system.

This annual maintenance program flushes water mains in an effort to ensure a high level of water quality by preventing corrosion and maintaining a proper disinfection residual.

Water main flushing will begin in the southeast section of the city and proceed west to the city limits then north, remaining west of Jefferson Avenue. Following completion of the west side of the Midland city limits, flushing east of Jefferson will commence in the southern section and again proceed north.

Once the city limits are complete, crews will then move into the townships that are served by the City of Midland Water Division. The following townships are served by our crews: Midland, Homer, Larkin, and Mills townships.

The entire process should be completed in approximately 10 weeks.

Water main flushing sometimes results in discolored water. While not harmful, tap water may appear orange in color for 5-15 minutes. Water customers should avoid doing laundry while their water is discolored.

Information regarding daily flushing activities will be posted under the heading Water Flushing Program in the Water Division page on the City’s website at www.cityofmidlandmi.gov/water.

If you have questions in regard to this annual program, contact the Water Distribution Office at 989-837-6950, Monday – Friday, from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
