Check Cell Phones, Safety Devices with 3G Technology

December 10, 2021 – Residents are reminded to check their cell phones, alarm systems, and other technology devices as mobile carriers begin to shut down their 3G networks to make room for more advanced network services, including 5G. 3G network technology will become unavailable for some users as soon as January 1, 2022.

As a result of this change, many older cell phones will be unable to make or receive calls and texts, including calls to 911, or use data services. This will affect 3G mobile phones and certain older 4G mobile phones that do not support Voice over LTE (VoLTE or HD Voice).

Additionally, some technology used in cellular communications equipment for fire alarms may also cease to work, as an upgrade to the technology will render some older devices inoperable. Residents who utilize cellular communications for their residential fire alarm systems should contact their fire alarm provider to ensure that it will continue to work after 3G networks disappear.

Questions related to fire safety devices and the impact of this change on these systems can be directed to Midland Fire Department Fire Marshal Tony Lelo at (989) 837-3413.
