[ARCHIVED] City Issues Update on Currie Parkway Bridge Closure

October 15, 2021 – The City of Midland has announced that the historic Currie Parkway Bridge will remain closed to vehicular traffic through at least spring 2022 due to significant damage sustained from an overweight vehicle.

At this time, the pedestrian walkway on the bridge has reopened to the public and is safe for use. For safety reasons, it is imperative that users do not access the vehicle side of the bridge, even on foot.

City officials initially closed the bridge to traffic on Friday, October 1 following concerns that an oversized vehicle exceeding the 10,000-pound weight limit had used the bridge. A detailed inspection by Great Lakes Engineering Group, LLC conducted this week determined that several parts of the bridge have sustained significant structural damage and will require extensive repairs before it is safe to reopen to vehicular traffic.

Due to the extent of required repairs, material lead times, and the ongoing investigation into the incident, it is anticipated that the Currie Parkway Bridge will remain closed to vehicles through spring 2022.The City is exploring all available options in response to the cause of the initial closure.

At this time, the pedestrian walkway on the bridge has reopened to the public and is safe for use. Updates on the bridge’s status for vehicular traffic will be provided as new information is made available.
