[ARCHIVED] Midland City Council Nominating Petitions Available

Tuesday, April 21 at 4 p.m. is the deadline to submit a nominating petition for persons interested in being elected to Midland’s City Council in November.

Midland is divided into five districts, called wards, and each of these wards elects a City Council member every two years. To qualify as a Council candidate, you must be a registered voter in the city of Midland, a resident of the city of Midland for at least one year immediately prior to the date of the election and a resident of the ward from which you seek to be elected prior to the date of election.

Candidates must file a nominating petition containing at least 20, but not more than 40, valid signatures of registered voters of the ward from which they seek election. Candidates must also complete an Affidavit of Identity and Receipt of Filing with Campaign Finance Act Compliance Statement before May 12. Contact the Midland City Clerk’s Office for nominating petition information. Completed nominating petitions must be returned to the City Clerk’s Office by 4 p.m. on April 21.

A Statement of Organization form must also be completed at the Midland County Clerk’s Office, 220 W. Ellsworth Street.

If three or more nominating petitions are received for any one ward, a primary election will be held on August 4 for that ward only. The two persons receiving the highest number of votes cast in the August Primary Election will be placed on the November 3 ballot for their ward. The person receiving the highest number of votes in the November election will be declared Council member for that ward.

Members of the 2015-2017 City Council will be sworn into office on November 9 for a two-year term.

For questions or further information about nominating petitions or the election process, contact the Midland City Clerk’s Office at 989-837-3310.
