February 26, 2014 – Midland County is a great place for middle class America.
So says CNNMoney, which listed Midland County as one of eight communities across the country where the middle class thrives. The county was noted for its strong business base, top notch public safety and roads, minimal taxes, and high quality of life. Midland was the only Michigan community to receive the recognition.
“Midland is a place where business, government, non-profits, philanthropies, and neighbors work together to foster an outstanding quality of life,” said Midland Mayor Maureen Donker. “While our nation is experiencing a shrinking middle class, we are proud to provide an environment where the American dream is possible.”
Communities were considered based on unemployment numbers, income levels, violent crime rates, poverty and inequality levels, housing costs, college degree attainment, school enrollment numbers, and access to key locations in the community. Data sources included CNNMoney, nonprofit organizations Opportunity Nation and Measure of America, the U.S. Census Bureau, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and U.S. Department of Education.
