September 18, 2020 – Downtown Midland businesses will celebrate Buy Nearby Weekend October 2 -4 by offering special merchandise, sales, and the chance for one lucky shopper to win a $500 gift card.

The weekend event is part of the Michigan Retailers Association (MRA) Buy Nearby campaign that encourages shoppers to support their communities by spending their dollars locally.

“Michiganders send $18.5 billion annually to out-of-state retailers,” said Lacey Todd, Events Coordinator of the Downtown Development Authority. “Keeping those sales in Michigan would give a big boost to our communities.”

Nine Downtown Midland businesses will hold special Buy Nearby open houses October 2 - 4. As an extra incentive to buy nearby, all shoppers who post a photo of themselves  on social media shopping at a local store or featuring a locally-purchased item will be entered into a contest to win a $500 gift card. To enter, use #buynearbymi on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. Entrants must be 18 or older to win and must set their social media post to “public” to be entered.

Additional information about the Buy Nearby campaign can be found online at www.buynearbymi.com and on Facebook (Buy Nearby), Twitter (@buynearbymi), and Instagram (@mibuynearby). To view participating Downtown Midland businesses, visit www.downtownmidland.com.

For questions or additional information about Downtown Midland, contact the Downtown Development Authority office at 989-837-3330 during regular office hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. or visit www.downtownmidland.com.
