June 26, 2020 – The City of Midland has mailed recycling schedule magnets and updated recycling information to City residents good through June 2023.
The City’s new recycling contract with Republic Services has eliminated #3 and #6 plastics from curbside collection and stresses that items must be clean and dry in order to be recycled. Residents should keep in mind that an item may still be recyclable by another entity, but may not be recycled through the City’s curbside recycling collection program.
Recycling contamination has resulted in substantial increases in the cost of the City’s curbside recycling program. Contamination of materials can render an entire truckload of items unrecyclable. Residents should throw away any item in the trash if they’re unsure it can be recycled through the City’s curbside program.
In addition to the mailed information, residents are invited to access a free digital recycling tool developed by Recycle Coach for City residents. “What Goes Where” is a searchable database that contains more than 10,000 items and provides residents with information if items are:
• Recyclable curbside
• Recyclable at a drop-off location
• Disposed of as part of weekly refuse collection
• Disposed of as part of monthly heavy item collection
• Reusable/able to be donated
• Specific guidelines for curbside disposal
• Accepted at the City of Midland Sanitary Landfill
“What Goes Where” is available on the Recycle Coach mobile app or online at www.cityofmidlandmi.gov/recycling.
Residents can find all of the City’s collection schedules, as well as set mobile alert reminders, by using the free Recycle Coach™ app available on mobile from the iTunes Store and Google Play. Collection schedules are also provided in the annual City Calendar & Services Guide that is mailed to City residents and businesses each December.
