[ARCHIVED] Open Positions Available on City Boards and Commissions

April 24, 2020 – Looking to make a difference in the Midland community? The City of Midland invites you to apply for open positions on one of the City’s boards and commissions

To complete an application, visit www.cityofmidlandmi.gov/boardscommissions and select the appropriate board or commission to find the desired application. Applicants may submitted their completed applications by email to cityhall@midland-mi.org; by mail to City Hall, Attention: City Manager’s Office, 333 W. Ellsworth Street, Midland, MI 48640; or by placing the application inside an envelope and putting it into the secure drop box located inside the front doors of City Hall. Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Friday, May 22.

Applicants must be City of Midland residents unless otherwise noted below. No previous experience or professional experience is required to serve; however, applicants must be able to attend the scheduled meetings. Any applicants who have previously applied for a board or commission vacancy are asked to submit a new application.

Please see below for a description of each board or commission’s responsibilities.

Aviation Advisory Commission

  • One pilot representative position with a term expiring June 30, 2023
    • Applicants must be active pilots basing their airplanes or flying airplanes at Jack Barstow Municipal Airport

The Aviation Advisory Commission advises the City Council on user charges and other aviation costs affecting the use and development of Jack Barstow Municipal Airport, which is the City of Midland’s general aviation airport.  The commission also advises the City Council on airport development plans including runways, hangars, building construction and other improvements.  This commission meets six times per year on the second Tuesday of the month at 5:00 p.m.

Cable Access Advisory Commission

  • One MCTV access user position with a term expiring June 30, 2023
    • Applicants for this position must be current MCTV access users.

The Cable Access Advisory Commission advises the City Council regarding general policy matters related to the services provided to public access producers and viewers through MCTV. The commission is also responsible for encouraging the use of public access channels and gaining public input. This commission meets quarterly on the second Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m.

Local Officers Compensation Commission

  • One citizen-at-large position with a term expiring June 30, 2027
    • Applicants must be registered voters in the City of Midland

The Local Officers Compensation Commission helps determine the salaries of Midland’s mayor and Midland City Council members.  The term for this commission’s members is seven years, but members only meet every other year.

Library Board

  • One township board member position with a term expiring June 30, 2022
  • One citizen-at-large position with a term expiring June 30, 2023

The Library Board studies library services offered to the community. The board advises City Council on user policies and future plans for improving library services. Meetings are held every other month beginning in January on the third Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. for a total of six (6) meetings per year.

Applicants for the township position must both reside within and currently serve on a township board in one of the following townships: Edenville, Greendale, Homer, Hope, Ingersoll, Jerome, Larkin, Lee, Lincoln, Midland, Mills, or Mt. Haley.

Parks & Recreation Commission

  • One citizen-at-large position with a term expiring June 30, 2023

The Parks and Recreation Commission advises the City Council on parks and recreation matters. The commission considers and studies the reasonable needs of recreational facilities and activities in which the City might properly participate and recommends annual fee adjustments for recreation services.  Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. 

Zoning Board of Appeals

  • One citizen-at-large alternate position with a term expiring June 30, 2023 (Alternate members of the ZBA serve as needed when regular members are unable to attend.)

The Zoning Board of Appeals provides an administrative review, interpretation or exception to the Zoning Ordinance and authorizes variances as defined in the Zoning Ordinance and laws of the State of Michigan. Responsibilities include reviewing, hearing and deciding appeals, granting variances, approving temporary permits, and granting special approvals as specified by the Zoning Ordinance. The ZBA meets monthly on the third Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m.
