[ARCHIVED] First COVID-19 Death Confirmed in Midland County

MIDLAND, MI. - The Midland County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) received notification today of the first local death attributed to COVID-19. The individual was an elderly male with underlying health conditions. He was hospitalized and passed away on April 7, 2020 at MidMichigan Medical Center - Midland.

“Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and loved ones,” said Fred Yanoski, Director/Health Officer. “Unfortunately, this is a grave reminder of the serious threat that COVID-19 is to our community and the residents of Michigan. Everyone needs to continue to take all of the current orders and recommendations very seriously to protect themselves and their loved ones”.

The Midland County Department of Public Health continues to encourage residents to take precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. COVID-19 symptoms may include fever, cough, shortness of breath, and flu-like symptoms and may appear between two (2) and fourteen (14) days after exposure. Knowing that COVID-19 can spread even before there are symptoms of illness, it is very important to stay home whenever possible, practice social distancing and to avoid contact with anyone who is not part of your household. cannot stress enough how important it is for our community to be diligent in their community mitigation efforts. We know that COVID-19 is in our community, and our residents can make a huge impact on slowing the spread of disease by following the recommended precautions.” said Fred Yanoski, Director/Health Officer at the Midland County Department of Public Health.
