[ARCHIVED] Midland City Council Nominating Petitions Available for Ward 3 Position

April 4, 2014 – Nominating petitions for the vacant Ward 3 Midland City Council seat are available at the City Clerk’s Office.

The Ward 3 post was vacated by Councilman J.Dee Brooks, who was elected in November 2013 to serve a two-year term on the Council. In March, Councilman Brooks resigned from City Council to pursue the elected position of Midland County Prosecuting Attorney.

The Ward 3 seat is one of five that comprises Midland’s City Council. In accordance with Michigan State Election Law, election of a new Ward 3 councilman will take place during the Primary Election scheduled for Tuesday, August 5, 2014.

To qualify as a City Council candidate, you must be registered to vote in Ward 3 and a resident of the city of Midland at least one year prior to the August 5, 2014 election. Qualified candidates interested in running for the Ward 3 position must first file a nominating petition containing at least 20, but not more than 40, valid signatures of registered voters of the third ward. Candidates must also complete an Affidavit of Identity and Receipt of Filing with Campaign Finance Act Compliance Statement. Nominating Petitions and Affidavit of Identity forms are available at the Midland City Clerk’s Office, 333 W. Ellsworth Street. The forms must be completed and returned to the City Clerk’s Office by no later than 4 p.m., Tuesday, April 22, 2014.

A Statement of Organization form must also be completed; this is available at the Midland County Clerk’s Office, 220 W. Ellsworth Street.

Qualified candidates will appear on the Ward 3 ballot for the August 5 Primary Election. The successful candidate will be sworn in at the August 25 City Council meeting and will complete the term, which expires in November 2015.

For questions or further information about nominating petitions or the election process, contact the Midland City Clerk’s Office at 989-837-3310.
