[ARCHIVED] Annual Mosquito Abatement Program Begins in Midland

April 19, 2017 – This week, Midland County Mosquito Control takes to the skies to begin its annual mosquito abatement program. Residents are advised that low-flying yellow Air Tractor airplanes will be treating areas of standing water to eliminate mosquito larvae. The active chemical used for mosquito control is safe for both humans and animals and only mosquito larvae are negatively impacted by treatment.

Residents are invited to learn more about mosquito abatement at the newly-constructed Midland Community Aviation Discovery Area (MCADA) at Jack Barstow Airport in Midland on Saturday, April 22. A representative from the Midland County Mosquito Control Department will be on hand to explain how the mosquito treatment program works and how mosquito populations can be greatly reduced by modern control techniques. Visitors can also get an up-close look at the Air Tractor airplanes used in the program.

The MCADA is open to the public and offers visitors the ability to learn about all things aviation, including a comfortable viewing area for watching airplane takeoffs and landings and flight preparation activity, a real airplane on display, an aviation-themed educational area, and broadcasted radio communications from pilots available for public listening. There is also a covered pavilion with picnic tables and play areas for younger children.
