October 31, 2014 – Kickoff of the 2014-15 Battle of the Books season will be held at the Grace A. Dow Memorial Library on Saturday, November 8 in the Library Auditorium. The kickoff features a presentation by Heather Vogel Frederick, author of last year’s Battle book, The Black Paw, as well as The Mother-Daughter Book Club series. The 20 titles on this year’s Battle list will be revealed at the end of the program.
Heather Vogel Frederick will speak at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the Library Auditorium. There will be an opportunity to meet the author at the book signing following the presentation. Barnes and Noble will be selling the author’s books, along with all of the books on the Battle list, after both of the programs.
Attendees of the kickoff event may also check out Battle books immediately after the 10 a.m. program in the Youth Services Area. Battle books will be available for general checkout after 3 p.m. on November 8. Books and booklists will not be available between programs.
Battle of the Books is a program designed to encourage and reward fourth and fifth grade readers. The program runs from Kickoff in November through the final battle in early March. Teams read from the list of books selected to engage a wide variety of interests. Participants compete as a team in battles over the books beginning in mid-February. Students are encouraged to talk about the stories amongst their teammates to make the most of this shared reading experience.
